Behind the Kit: Lovecraft

Behind the Kit: Lovecraft

This week, we’re thrilled to unveil our latest Kit, Lovecraft, now available in Cargo and on our web store. Inspired by the haunting mythos of H.P. Lovecraft and the shadowy corners of New England, this Kit invites you into a town shrouded in fog and mystery—where the architecture hints at secrets best left forgotten and every street feels like a page from a chilling tale.

Crafted to help creators evoke unease, atmosphere, and storytelling depth, the Lovecraft Kit includes everything from decaying apartments and twisted taverns to an ominous city hall, a forgotten library, and a lighthouse barely holding back the void. Whether you're building suspenseful cinematic moments, eerie game environments, or surreal narrative illustrations, this Kit gives you the tools to conjure worlds both beautiful and unsettling.

In this edition of our Behind the Kit series, we sat down with the KitBash3D artists who brought this strange town to life. From texture choices to architectural references, discover how they infused every element with a sense of creeping dread—and why designing horror might just be one of the most creatively freeing challenges yet.

Join us as we go behind the scenes of Lovecraft, and explore how the team built a Kit where madness and imagination walk hand in hand.

What was your favorite part about working on Lovecraft?

"My absolute favorite part of working on the Kit was injecting the massive lore and mythos of Lovecraft into this Kit. From the subtle hints at Cthulhu to giving life to the occult, figuring out where and how we should bring in those details was incredible." - Mike Reese, Head of Kits

“My favorite part about working on Lovecraft was the aesthetic. It's so grim and eerie, the amount of emotion you can put into the Kit just by adding certain little story elements giving it this otherworldly feel is what made it so fantastic to me.” - Timo Fahrbach, 3D Modeler

“I loved how unique the Kit theme was. Being able to create buildings that evoke a spooky fishing village was a lot of fun.” - Lienny Ruiz, 3D Modeler

“Lovecraft is one of my favorite writers, and working on this Kit was pure joy. I listened to all the audiobooks to immerse myself and better capture the atmosphere of eldritch horror.” - Nikita Kulchitskiy, Material Artist

“Trying to make everything more spooky was my favorite part. We invested a lot of time on this Kit to add details like Spanish moss - it was really fun.” - Anderson Araujo, Material Artist

"Lovecraft was incredibly fun because I had the chance to go back and really dive into the storylines from a different perspective. My favorite part was designing the signs for the storefronts, I loved making up names, adding some subtle references from the Lovecraft universe." - Emily Amick, Graphic Designer

“The theme was highly inspiring. I loved the darkness of the Lovecraft universe.” - Ecbel Ouesti, Concept Artist

What was the most challenging part about this Kit?

“The biggest challenge was capturing the eerie, otherworldly feel of Lovecraft's horror. We tackled it by adding wetness and grunge to our materials, using plenty of decals, and applying unique texturing.” - Nikita Kulchitskiy, Material Artist

"The most challenging part was merging the victorian, nautical and fantastical styles of the Lovecraft settings. I tried to embrace the era while adding really moody, dark motifs to complement the derelict, nefarious look of the models in the Kit." - Emily Amick, Graphic Designer

Is there anything about the Lovecraft Kit you'd like to highlight or shout out?

“I’d like to highlight Lienny’s amazing work on set dressing—after that, the Kit truly came to life and the atmosphere became so much more immersive and eerie. Also, the graphics created by Emily, like the newspaper signs and books, played a key role in enhancing the atmosphere and really helped bring everything together.” - Nikita Kulchitskiy, Material Artist

“I want to shout out Nikita for the way he used geometry nodes so we could paint some fish around some buildings, it made everything faster. We could put fish just wherever we wanted - it was great!” - Anderson Araujo, Material Artist

“Shoutout to Nikita and Anderson on the awesome decal textures on this Kit! The addition of moss hanging from the beams of the buildings and the added cracks on the walls really made this Kit feel eerie.” - Lienny Ruiz, 3D Modeler

Do you have a favorite asset from the Kit?

“I really loved the fish port structures—they perfectly capture the atmosphere from the author’s books.” - Nikita Kulchitskiy, Material Artist

“Not just one but the Light House, Deepwater Church and the fishing ports  are my favorite assets from this Kit. I think those buildings really bring the spooky feeling and tell a story of the place.” - Anderson Araujo, Material Artist

“I love the pub, it has a front porch that we got to set dress with some seating and even added in a little bit of story where there is a broken railing and a stool fallen over as if a fight happened there in typical pub fashion.” - Lienny Ruiz, 3D Modeler

Was there anything that surprised you about this theme or the Kit while you worked on it?

“I was surprised by how much our Kit transformed after working with decals and set dressing. It really brought everything to life in ways I hadn’t anticipated.” - Nikita Kulchitskiy, Material Artist

“I didn't think it would have so many fishing props. Previous to this Kit I did not have much knowledge on the theme so it was a nice surprise that we had the opportunity to make so many cool assets we hadn't produced before.” - Lienny Ruiz, 3D Modeler
