What was your favorite part about working on London?

“Learning more about the city and how it’s different from cities in the U.S. I have not been across the pond so it was fun working with the team who have lived there to ensure we were getting the buildings correct. The researching and reference-gathering phases were a blast!” - Mike Reese, VP of Kits

“Incorporating the various identity elements that characterize the city of London. Beyond the usual technical and artistic research, some of my investigations focused on cultural aspects that define both Londoners and the UK as a whole.” - Tom Berczeller, Material Artist

“Honestly, the unique blend of different styles of architecture was my favorite aspect of this Kit. For example some of the buildings shared Modern and Victorian elements which created some very appealing shapes.” - Joseph W Sylvester - 3D Modeler

“Creating structures with gable roofs, beautiful brick tiles, and elegant windows.” - Mohammad Afshari, 3D Modeler

“Looking up references on Google Maps for the materials was like traveling to this place. It made me learn more about this culture.” - Gabs Herrera, Material Artist

What was the most challenging part about this Kit? How did you overcome that challenge?:

“This Kit was a real challenge! London has so many detailed and clustered areas that we spent a lot of time working on the balance between clusters, skyscrapers, and how to have some fun and unique branding that made each area feel unique.” - Mike Reese, VP of Kits

“Architecture in London has its own unique character. Part of it is expressed in the minimalist facades. Perhaps one of the most difficult tasks in terms of concepts was to come up with buildings that would look simple (as London architecture generally looks) and complex, so that they would not look boring. In my opinion, by combining buildings into clusters, by using a large number of different buildings, this was possible to implement.” - Vladislav Shlenov, Concept Artist

“Working with skyscrapers, the scale of details, and their specific materials was challenging. Since these are such large props, it was difficult to balance the tiling from different heights and perspectives, as well as to create convincing glass materials for the windows that would match the various tones of the structures. I overcame that by iterating and experimenting until I achieved a favorable result, as well as consulting internally with other teammates and by reading documentation.” - Tom Berczeller, Material Artist

“I would say the quantity of work in each building proved the most challenging. Usually, when I tackle a concept, it is one building with one, maybe two different styles of windows and a couple doors. The challenge for this Kit was that there were often 4 or 5 buildings in one cluster, each with their own set and style of windows and doors. We anticipated the scope of the doors and windows fairly well, which helped alleviate a lot of the work down the road and allowed me to focus mostly on the rest of the architecture.” - Joseph W Sylvester - 3D Modeler

What was the biggest thing you learned while developing the Kit?

"I learned not to underestimate the difficulty of props and structures based on first impressions. That worked against me when planning my time, as the Kit ended up being more complex than I initially thought.  - Tom Berczeller, Material Artist

"It was very interesting to understand the nuances of London architecture - how the roofs are arranged (very typical for London), gutters, windows, bay windows and much more. It is always especially interesting to study the architectural features of a particular region or era. And since London has a mixture of different eras, while preserving some architectural features - it was very interesting to trace these patterns of the principles of national architecture. I also want to note that this was my first project, which I led from start to finish, as a Lead Artist. I learned a huge number of technical things, and I hope you like the Kit!" - Vladislav Shlenov, Concept Artist

"I learned a lot more about architectural principles thanks to the Kit lead, Vlad. He helped guide me a lot through each building and helped solve a lot of challenges that came up as the Kit was being modeled." - Joseph W Sylvester - 3D Modeler

Do you have a favorite asset from the Kit?

“My favorite asset is the downtown clusters. I love seeing all the different shops and interesting areas to explore.” - Mike Reese, VP of Kits

“The glass domed tower! Its shape stands out significantly compared to the other buildings and was my main inspiration when designing the base metallic material, which ultimately led to various derivatives of the metallic facades for the rest of the Kit.” - Tom Berczeller, Material Artist

“The Phone Booth. It has a great classic style with a red colour that makes the city much more beautiful.” - Mohammad Afshari, 3D Modeler
