This week, we released Oasis, our latest (and largest) Sci Fi Kit. With more than 72 models and 92 materials depicting sleek and futuristic designs, Oasis captures the hope and excitement of a new technological dawn. It's truly a feast for contemporary architecture admirers and sci-fi fanatics alike.
To break down the inspiration and design research that went into the Kit, we talked with the KitBash3D team of modelers, texture artists, and more about their process for bringing the Kit to life.
What's the story behind Oasis?
"Introducing Oasis, the long-awaited successor to one of our favorite Kits - Utopia. It took years to perfect, but we believe Oasis is the sequel we've been waiting for. With its breathtaking blend of nature and technology, inspired by the likes of Calatrava and Zaha Hadid, this futuristic vision is a stunning fusion of organic forms and modern design. This is a world where people and nature live in harmony and technology is used to enhance our lives, not replace them. We're so excited to see the bright futures you will create with Oasis!" - Maxx Burman, Co-Founder of KitBash3D
What was your favorite part about working on Oasis and why?
“My favorite part about working on Oasis was discussing the architecture with the whole team. This Kit was extremely challenging from an engineering perspective as we wanted to make sure that everything was grounded in reality while also feeling futuristic and grand. We have some absolutely huge buildings so going through them and taking the time to add in the details to make them work from a human level was a big task. Our modeling team did a great job filling in the gaps and coming up with a lot of great solutions.” - Mike Reese, Head of Kits
“This Kit was a challenge for me, since I've never had a go at modeling such organic structures before, but in the end I had so much fun with it. Getting the base shapes in-line with the concepts, and then adding more and more layers of detail was an incredibly satisfying workflow, and I feel like I grew a lot as an artist while working on Oasis. Our concept artist Fabio did an amazing job on refining the concepts, and it was a real privilege to be able to bring them into 3D.” - JD Havenga, Modeler
“My favorite part was going beyond the concept art and having lots of creative freedom in making sense of a very challenging sci-fi organic architecture with very complex forms and shapes. Also researching and getting inspired from other sources with amazing ideas and trying to transpose them in our buildings from which I learned so much!” - Dan Ene, Modeler
“Teamwork and brainstorming on the Oasis rightfully deserves to be my favorite part of working on this project. Sometimes we had to look for texturing solutions that would not just complement the geometry, but noticeably improve the overall look, such as the leaf-shaped stained glass windows for our Dome Garden building.” - Alexey Druzhkov, Texture Artist
“The concept stage was both challenging and interesting since this Kit has been refined a couple of times and we wanted to add a bit more detail and make it feel as if it could be built and could be used. Talking with Fabio about architectural language and articulation was super fun. Also going back and reworking some of the floor materials to be grass and figure out what made sense was something I enjoyed a lot.” - Luis Tornel, Asset Supervisor
“My favorite part of Oasis was grounding the first pass of designs that Yogi Soelestama did. The direction he established for the Kit was really impressive and the team loved it. The challenge for me was making sure that the organic structures could house the space to adhere to its function and make the forms simpler for the pipeline.” - Fabio Fernandes, Concept Artist
Do you have a favorite model from the Kit?
“My two favorite structures would have to be the Hotel and the Culture Center. Both structures have such unique shapes, from the twisting forms of the Hotel to the flower shape of the Culture Center. And as always, our texturing artists Alexey and Anderson did a phenomenal job making the structures look even more breathtaking with amazing texture work.” - JD Havenga, Modeler
“I love the Sports Arena! Each building has specific features indicating also its functionality, the very dynamic flow represents that! Also everything is very harmonious and well "played" together! One of the aspects I love about the Kit is the flowy, dynamic features of the architecture.” - Dan Ene, Modeler
“My favorite model is its Culture Center, which reminds me of a lotus flower. I originally wanted to show this building so that it is different from the rest and looks more organic than the simple concrete leaves of the flower. I covered them with metal material, with unusual gradient color properties.” - Alexey Druzhkov, Texture Artist
“My favorite model is the deep-space telecommunications tower. I just really love how simple the overall design is while also being very detailed the closer you go. I am a huge science fiction nerd and this building in particular hits a lot of the aspects that I enjoy about far-future science fiction.” - Mike Reese, Head of Kits
“My favorite model would be the Expo Centre. I really love the flow and harmony of shapes. I think it turned out amazing.” - Fabio Fernandes, Concept Artist
Is there anything about the Oasis Kit you'd like to highlight or shout out?
“I touched on it before but this Kit was a massive design challenge. The whole team worked hard and brought it all together and I am really proud of everyone. Huge shout-out to Fabio for figuring out a lot of how the buildings should be designed at the ground level and for some additional storytelling. Dan and JD did an amazing job working together and adding tons of additional flourishes to connect the flowing shapes together, and to Alexey and Anderson for making sure it all felt cohesive with the materials. Amazing job all around!” - Mike Reese, Head of Kits
“I'd like to shout out the amazing modeling work done by our senior modeler Dan on the large structures in the Kit. Some of them have really difficult shapes, in addition to being huge, but Dan knocked the modeling of them out of the park. He added really unique and fitting details to them, which only enriched the already great concepts, and really put in the time and effort to take this Kit to the next level. - JD Havenga, Modeler
“Oasis was one of the most challenging Kits I’ve worked on because of the very organic and difficult forms to achieve. I liked how JD was crafting his models and got inspiration from his workflow. In the end, everyone did a fantastic job, shot out to all, many thanks to JD, Luis, Mike and Alexey for giving color and texture to this amazing Kit! - Dan Ene, Modeler
“The task for our modeling team was more complicated than usual. They had to model a lot of curves and organic shapes whose topology would also be good for texturing and working with UVs, and they did a great job.” - Alexey Druzhkov, Texture Artist
“This Kit was an architecture design challenge and Fabio with the concepts, Dan and JD with the models, nailing the forms and adding details, and finally, Alexey not only with the excellent materials but did an amazing job planning how to UV the whole Kit.” - Luis Tornel, Asset Supervisor
“I would like to highlight the amazing work that the modelers and texture artists did to bring the final sketches to such a high quality. The final models really made the designs even more grounded and believable.” - Fabio Fernandes, Concept Artist
