This week, we're releasing Wreckage, the latest addition to our Battlefields collection, to our web store and Cargo. Featuring meticulously detailed models of demolished staples of city life, including collapsed highway overpasses, crumbling infrastructure, and ruinous urban buildings, this Kit showcases the raw power of destruction.
Read on to check out behind-the-scenes concept art and hear more about our newest Kit from the KitBash3D team of modelers, texture artists, and more that built it.
What was your favorite part about working on Wreckage?
“Wreckage was a blast to work on! This Kit posed all sorts of challenges but it was fun all the way through. My favorite part was working with the modeling team to design the rubble and how we wanted to layer it to ensure it felt realistic. This Kit has a ton going on and the team did an amazing job not only making the Kit feel chaotic but also cohesive.” - Mike Reese, Head of Kits
“The best part is that it was my first project! But I was also excited about how well organized and managed the project was. That all the reusable debris elements were textured before the simulation and all the replicated objects were instanced. It was really awesome.” - Nikita Kulchitskiy, Texture Artist
“One of my favorite things about Wreckage was playing with the simulated rubble to get a good variety of chunks for each unique buildings. It was especially fun working on all of the wooden structures and balancing out the amount of planks, splinters and other rubble pieces.” - Lienny Ruiz, 3D Modeler
“My favorite part about working on Wreckage would have to have been destroying the plane. We had a plane that I got to absolutely dismantle and split in half, it felt great! I got to take that piece of hardware and absolutely crush it. It was also plenty of fun to just add all the little details, the insulation, the wrecked seats, the masks…” - Timo Fahrbach, 3D Modeler
“My favorite part was how "messy" this Kit is in a good way. It was really fun to put textures and bring the feeling of destruction and was amazing to experiment a new workflow for the border damage. Laura did a nice job on the material so we could apply the damages on the buildings.” - Anderson Araujo, Texture Artist
Do you have a favorite model from the Kit?
“My favorite model is the exploded bus. The way that our modeler, Timo, sculpted all the amazing details and tore the crap out of our bus model was fantastic. Then Anderson took that and made it even better with his texture work, placing burned and charred elements to help bring the model to the next level.” - Mike Reese, Head of Kits
“I really like the suburban houses. Those have so much story and detail showing how the wood might have broken, the layers behind broken walls and leftover ducting within the broken ceiling. You really feel the destruction in those models.” - Lienny Ruiz, 3D Modeler
“My favorite model in the Kit would have to be the destroyed bus. It's not something you get to do everyday and seeing it come together so well was really enjoyable for me. It was cool that it turned out so nicely.” - Timo Fahrbach, 3D Modeler
“I really loved the Collapsed Offices and the Parking Lot, I think both of these buildings have so much debris and really show what this Kit is all about.” - Anderson Araujo, Texture Artist
Is there anything about the Wreckage Kit you'd like to highlight or shout out?
“Huge shout-out to our simulation expert Lienny! She did some amazing work with the rubble and debris. It was a joy seeing how she developed the pipeline to make this Kit feel as crazy as it does.” - Mike Reese, Head of Kits
“Shout out to Timo for wrecking (in a good way) some cars, vans and even an airplane! Also, overall shout to the whole team, Wreckage turned out incredible!” - Lienny Ruiz, 3D Modeler
“Shout out to Lienny. Really excellent workflow for the destruction of rubble on this one. Maya has a pretty lackluster rubble workflow but it seems like the tyflow solution worked absolute wonders on this one.” - Timo Fahrbach, 3D Modeler
“Big shout out for the Lienny and Timo, the debris simulation and distribution for this Kit looks insane and perfect placed. When i saw the models for the first time with all the debris I was shocked!” - Anderson Araujo, Texture Artist
